Medicinal Plant Development Project in Vietnam

Vietnamese Medicinal Herbs – Illustrative Image
Vietnam boasts significant potential in medicinal plant resources, with over 5,000 species of medicinal plants and fungi, around 70 of which are available in large quantities, including rare and valuable ones such as Ngoc Linh ginseng and Morinda officinalis. Cultivating and developing medicinal plants has helped increase farmers’ incomes, with economic efficiency 3–5 times higher than that of traditional food crops. The country maintains a gene preservation system across 7 ecological regions, storing over 1,500 genetic resources, including 11 medicinal herbs cultivated in accordance with GACP-WHO international standards.
The domestic herbal medicine market is vast, especially in traditional medicine, with rising demand. Vietnam also benefits from extensive land and abundant labor to develop medicinal plant cultivation. Medicinal herbs bring significantly higher economic value than food crops, contributing to poverty reduction in many areas. The Law on Pharmacy (2016) and relevant government policies have created favorable conditions for the sustainable development and competitiveness of the medicinal herb sector both domestically and internationally.
