On January 4, 2006, the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam granted Geographical Indication Registration Certificate No. 00019 for the product “Doan Hung Pomelo,” with the Phu Tho Provincial People’s Committee as the managing organization.
From ancient times, Doan Hung pomelo has been embedded in the cultural life of the Vietnamese people, symbolizing the Lo River midlands, as reflected in popular folk verses:
“Among delicious pomelos, Doan Hung leads the way
Refreshing to the soul, fragrant with the scent of home”
The fruit is round and slightly flattened with a round bottom and thin peel. When ripe, its skin turns an attractive yellow-green. The segments are pale pink or creamy yellow, juicy, nearly seedless, and crunchy with a sweet, refreshing flavor and a distinctive aroma. Each fruit weighs between 800g and 1.2kg. It has a high content of vitamin C and minerals, with an average Brix level of 9–11%.
Doan Hung pomelo is mainly cultivated along the Lo River, where the ancient alluvial soils are lightly mixed, deep, nutrient-rich, and well-drained. The humid subtropical climate—with an average annual temperature of 23–25°C, rainfall of 1,500–1,800mm, and high humidity—provides ideal conditions for growth and flavor development.
The people of Doan Hung have cultivated pomelo for decades and possess in-depth knowledge of care techniques, canopy shaping, and natural flowering and fruiting processes. Many households and cooperatives follow VietGAP standards, apply organic fertilizers, and use eco-friendly biological methods, helping maintain the quality and reputation of Doan Hung pomelo.
Includes 19 communes and townships of Doan Hung district, Phu Tho province—home to the ancestral pomelo variety and the most renowned pomelo-growing region in northern Vietnam.
