On February 7, 2012, the Intellectual Property Office issued Decision No. 194/QĐ‑SHTT, granting Geographical Indication Certificate No. 00030 for the product "Ninh Thuan grapes". The People's Committee of Ninh Thuan Province is the managing authority of this GI.

The two main grape varieties under this GI are:

  • Ninh Thuan red grapes: round fruit, thin skin, from bright red to deep red color, with a harmonious sweet‑sour taste, weighing 4.57–5.92 g per berry.

  • NH01‑48 grapes: oval fruit, light greenish‑yellow skin, translucent and soft flesh, rich sweetness with low acidity, weighing 5.53–6.91 g per berry.

Quality specifications:

  • Red grapes: water content 82.09–87.43%, total sugar 6.78–9.11%, total soluble solids 15.15–16.53%.

  • NH01‑48 grapes: water content 85.14–88.16%, total sugar 7.77–11.15%, total soluble solids 11.97–13.42%.

These characteristics are attributed to the unique geography of the region:

  • Semi-arid climate, surrounded on three sides by mountains and on one side by the sea.

  • The lowest rainfall in the country (650–750 mm/year), average temperature 27–30 °C, humidity 70–77%, and high sunshine hours (2,800–2,900 hours/year).

  • The soil is mainly slightly acidic alluvial and light loamy brown soil.

Traditional cultivation techniques further enhance quality:

  • Selective planting with a density of 2,000 vines/ha.

  • Steel trellises 1.8–2.0 m high.

  • Selective pruning to form “spurs” and “fruiting canes”.

  • Planting at the end of the rainy season and harvesting three crops per year.

Careful harvesting and post-harvest processing:

  • Cutting clusters with scissors to avoid bruising.

  • Treating with 35% ethanol at 48 °C for 1 minute, then chilling and drying.

  • Packaging in cartons lined with paraffin or wrapped in nylon for good preservation.

The GI area covers: Phuoc Dan town, Phuoc Thuan, Phuoc Son, Phuoc Huu communes (Ninh Phuoc District), and Phuoc Nam commune (Thuan Nam District), Ninh Thuan Province.
