On June 8, 2007, the Vietnam Intellectual Property Office granted Geographical Indication Certificate No. 00017 for the “Luc Ngan lychee”, with the People’s Committee of Bac Giang Province designated as the managing authority.

The product has found its place in poetry and daily life, symbolizing Kinh Bac – the fertile land along the Luc River:

“Luc Ngan lychee, red and bright,
In every harvest, a sweet delight.”

Distinctive characteristics: The lychee fruit is round and uniform, with thin pink-red skin and sparse protuberances. The flesh is thick, translucent white, juicy, crisp, mildly sweet, and has a small seed. Average fruit weight is 20–30g. It has high dry matter and total sugar content (Brix level from 17 to 22) and a high vitamin C content (around 35–45 mg per 100g of pulp).

Geographical conditions: Luc Ngan lychees are cultivated in low hilly terrain with yellow-red feralit soil developed from shale and granite. The soil is deep, nutrient-rich, with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. The region’s microclimate features a long, dry and cold winter – a critical factor for flower bud differentiation and the fruit’s unique sweetness.

Human factors: Luc Ngan farmers have decades of experience in lychee cultivation, mastering pruning, flowering control, organic care, and scientific harvesting. Many households and cooperatives are certified with VietGAP and GlobalG.A.P, and implement plantation codes and traceability systems, contributing to improved product quality and export value.

Protected geographical area: Luc Ngan District, Bac Giang Province, Vietnam.
